Margot Robbie is reportedly in talks to star in a Barbie movie, according The Hollywood Reporter, in addition to starring in the feature film, the Oscar-nominated actress would also produce the project through her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment.

Barbie has found a new studio lot for her Malibu Dream House.

A movie about the popular doll was in development for years at Sony, but now Mattel is partnering with Warner Bros. for a feature film, with Margot Robbie in talks to star.

Robbie would also produce the project through her LuckyChap banner.

It was first announced in 2014 that Mattel was partnering with Sony for a Barbie movie. In 2016 it was reported that Amy Schumer would star in the movie that was billed as putting a contemporary spin on the toy with an emphasis on feminism and identity. A few months later Schumer dropped out of the project due to “scheduling conflicts.” It was later reported Anne Hathaway would replace Schumer.

In January, Sony pushed the movie’s release date from Aug. 8, 2018, to May 8, 2020, but the rights to Barbie reverted back to Mattel a few months later, and it appears the toymaker has found a new studio partner.

Sources say that Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is circling the Warners project but indicate there are no substantive talks that have taken place.

If deals make, the Barbie movie would continue a partnership between Robbie and Warner Bros., where her LuckyChap banner has a first-look deal. The studio is gearing up for the Robbie-produced Birds of Prey, which will see her reprise her DCU role as Harley Quinn.

Robbie, who earned an Oscar nomination for last year’s I, Tonya, will next be seen in Mary Queen of Scots and is currently working on Sony’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She is repped by CAA, Management 360 and Jackoway Tyerman.

The Hollywood Reporter – Margot Robbie and Matthias Schoenaerts are set to star in the Nazi revenge thriller ‘Ruin.

Justin Kurzel, who directed Assassin’s Creed, will helm the Black List-topping script by Matthew and Ryan Firpo for Marc Butan’s Mad River Pictures. Set in post-World War II Germany, Ruin sees a Holocaust survivor, played by Robbie, forced to make an unlikely alliance with an ex-SS captain (Schoenaerts) in her quest to exact revenge.

Together, they hunt down the surviving members of the captain’s former Nazi death squad. Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot was earlier in negotiations to star in Ruin.

The film is set to shoot in Prague in spring 2019. Robbie will next appear as Queen Elizabeth I in Focus Features’ Mary Queen of Scots and is currently in production on Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for Sony’s Columbia Pictures label.

She is also set to play Harley Quinn in the untitled Birds of Prey film for Warner Bros., which she is also producing under her LuckyChap banner. Schoenaerts will next be seen in David Oelhoffen’s Close Enemies, which debuts in Venice, and Thomas Vinterberg’s Kursk, set to premiere in Toronto.

Butan is producing Ruin alongside Kurzel. Ara Keshishian is executive producing alongside Nik Bower and Deepak Nayar of Riverstone Pictures, who are co-financing.

CAA Media Finance packaged the film and is handling the U.S. rights, while IMR International will handle foreign sales.

Robbie is repped by Management 360, CAA and Aran Michael Management. Schoenaerts is repped by CAA and UBBA in Europe. Kurzel is repped by CAA and Katie Richter. Ryan and Matthew Firpo are repped by UTA and LBI Entertainment.

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Annapurna has tapped another A-list actress for its untitled movie about the women of Fox News.

Margot Robbie is in talks to join Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman in the project that centers on the women who took on the toxic male culture of the news network and its late chief Roger Ailes.

Theron will take on the role of former host Megyn Kelly, while Kidman will portray Gretchen Carlson. Robbie will play an associate producer at the news network.

The studio, which is already making a Dick Cheney biopic with helmer Adam McKay, is financing and producing the project that was written by The Big Short scribe Charles Randolph and will be directed by Jay Roach.

Theron will produce the feature along with Beth Kono and AJ Dix via their Denver & Delilah banner. Roach, Randolph and Margaret Riley are also producing.

Ailes ran Fox News and helped launch the careers of Kelly, Carlson and Sean Hannity with his powerful channel. He also was a prominent figure in Republican circles that helped elect presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George Bush. Ailes was forced to resign in 2016 when a host of accusations of sexual misconduct surfaced, with Carlson’s and Kelly’s the most high-profile, and which contributed to his exit from the network.

The untitled project is described as an ensemble pic, with Ailes and others who were involved at Fox News during his reign said to be major players in the piece. Characters included are likely to be Carlson, former anchor Greta Van Susteren, media mogul Rupert Murdoch and fired host Bill O’Reilly.

Robbie is coming off an Oscar nomination for her performance as Tonya Harding in I,Tonya, and will next be seen in another awards-season contender, Mary Queen of Scots.

DEADLINE – EXCLUSIVE: Deadline broke last July 11 that Quentin Tarantino had met with Margot Robbie and asked her to play Sharon Tate in his next film. She now has the offer and negotiations are underway to make it a reality. Robbie, who’s coming off her Oscar-nominated turn in the title role of I, Tonya, will join Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

As Tarantino continues to set a killer ensemble, Sony Pictures has dated the film for an August 9, 2019 release worldwide. The film is a Pulp Fiction-esque tapestry set in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood, around the time of the murder of Tate and several others in a killing spree ordered by Charles Manson.

The two other lead characters are Rick Dalton (DiCaprio), former star of a Western TV series, and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Pitt). Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. In the film Tate is Rick’s very famous next door neighbor.

Robbie is repped by CAA, Management 360, Aran Michael Management and Jackoway Tyerman.

DEADLINE – Bold Films will finance the Margot Robbie project Dangerous Odds in which the I, Tonya Best Actress Oscar nominee will play cleaning lady-turned-illegal sports betting empire boss Marisa Lankester. The project was picked up in turnaround from Warner Bros., where Robbie’s production company LuckyChap Entertainment has a first-look deal.

The project is based on Lankester’s memoir Dangerous Odds: My Secret Life Inside an Illegal Billion-Dollar Sports Betting Operation, which originally was won by Warner Bros. in a January 2015 auction as exclusively reported by Deadline. LuckyChap and Entertainment 360, the production arm of Management 360, will produce with Bold, and the feature is based on a script by Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton).

Lankester’s rags-to-riches tale is set during the 1980s as she rises through the ranks and takes on a pivotal role establishing the first offshore gambling operation, growing it into a billion-dollar-a-year criminal empire.

Said Bold Films Chairman Michel Litvak: “We are incredibly excited to work with Oscar-nominated actress Margot Robbie at this momentous time in her career. She will do an amazing job bring this thrilling true story and fascinating character to life.”

Added Bold Films CEO Gary Michael Walters, who is serving as EP with Svetlana Metkina: “It’s a great character; it’s a female Scarface in the rise of this great criminal operation under the leadership of a very savvy woman. Margot Robbie is an extraordinary actress and couldn’t be hotter right now. She is so versatile and strong with comedy, drama and action — she really is the full package, and that’s rare. She’s built up a great production company with LuckyChap.”

These type of independent films in the budget range of $25M-$35M are Bold’s sweet spot, and there’s a strong appetite for such fare in the current indie marketplace. Robbie’s film canon has reaped close to $1.9 billion at the global box office.

“We are building LuckyChap off of a passion to tell female-driven stories that feel original, unique and rebellious in nature,” LuckyChap Entertainment said. “We found all of this in Marisa’s story and couldn’t be more excited to partner with Bold Films and 360 to bring Dangerous Odds to the screen.”
